Format Converter

Convert images between PNG, JPEG, and WebP with quality control.

About Format Converter

Whether you need to convert a heavy PNG to a lightweight WebP for a website, prepare an AVIF for modern browsers, or extract a static frame from a GIF to a JPG, this free online image format converter handles it in seconds. Built for scale, it features a powerful batch processing engine that lets you drag and drop entire folders of images, instantly convert them all to your chosen format, and download them packaged neatly into a single ZIP file. It supports a wide range of modern and legacy formats including PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF, ICO, and TIFF. A built-in quality slider provides real-time feedback on your total estimated file size before you even click download, letting you perfectly balance visual fidelity with bandwidth savings. Everything runs entirely in your web browser—no uploads to remote servers, no privacy risks, and no file size limits.

How to Use Format Converter

  1. Upload Your Images: Drag and drop or click to select multiple JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, or other supported source images.
  2. Choose the Output Format: Select your target format from the format selector. Use PNG/WebP/AVIF if you need transparency.
  3. Set Quality (for Lossy Output): Drag the quality slider to your preferred compression level for formats like JPG and WebP. The 'Total Converted' size will update in real-time.
  4. Convert and Download: Click 'Download All'. The images are re-encoded in your browser and downloaded instantly as a ZIP file.

Key Features

  • Batch Image Conversion: Drop dozens of images into the tool simultaneously. Convert an entire gallery of heavy PNGs to optimized WebP files in seconds and download them all at once in a convenient ZIP archive.
  • 8 Supported Formats: Convert seamlessly between standard and next-generation formats: PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF, ICO, and TIFF. Future-proof your content with AVIF or ensure legacy compatibility with BMP.
  • Real-Time Size Tracking: As you adjust the quality slider, the tool instantly calculates and displays the new total estimated file size for your entire batch. Know exactly how much space you're saving before you download.
  • Convert Between PNG, JPG, and WebP: Supports all six combinations: PNG↔JPG, PNG↔WebP, JPG↔WebP — the three formats that cover virtually all image use cases on the modern web.
  • Precision Quality Control: For JPG and WebP output, a quality slider lets you set the compression level. 80–85% is the typical sweet spot — noticeably smaller files with no visible quality loss.
  • Transparency Preserved: PNG and WebP both support alpha channels. Converting between these two formats preserves transparency. Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with white.
  • 100% Private & Browser-Based: Your images are processed entirely on your device. No file is transmitted to a remote server at any point — essential when converting images with private or sensitive content.

Benefits

  • Improve Website Performance with WebP and AVIF: WebP files are 25–34% smaller than JPG at equal visual quality, and AVIF compresses even further. Converting your website's images is the fastest way to improve Google PageSpeed scores.
  • Fix Compatibility Issues Instantly: Some older tools, print services, and Office apps do not support WebP. Convert WebP to JPG or PNG to get a format that opens anywhere — Windows Photo Viewer, Outlook, Word, and legacy apps.
  • Remove Backgrounds by Converting to PNG: JPG and WebP photos that need transparent backgrounds must first become PNG. Convert to PNG, then use the Background Remover tool for a clean transparent cutout.
  • Reduce Archive Storage: Large PNG libraries compress dramatically when converted to WebP. Re-archiving photographic PNGs as WebP reduces storage requirements by 50–80%, which matters at scale for drives and cloud accounts.

Common Problems & Solutions

My transparent PNG has a white background after converting to JPG — how do I fix this?
JPG does not support transparency. Any transparent pixels are filled with white when saving as JPG. To keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP, or AVIF instead.
My CMS rejects the WebP or AVIF file I converted.
Some older CMS versions or plugins require WebP/AVIF support to be explicitly enabled in the server configuration. Check your CMS documentation or convert to JPG/PNG as a workaround.
I converted a JPG to PNG but the file is much larger now — why?
PNG is a lossless format and encodes photographs much less efficiently than JPG. For photos, JPG, WebP, and AVIF are much more efficient than PNG.
The quality looks worse after converting from WebP to JPG.
If the original WebP was already saved at a low quality, re-encoding to JPG adds a second round of lossy compression. Always start from the highest-quality version.

Pro Tips & Best Practices

  • For all new website images, choose WebP or AVIF as your production format — they beat JPG and PNG on file size at equivalent quality and support transparency like PNG. All modern browsers support them.
  • When sending images to print services, always use PNG or TIFF (lossless) rather than JPG to preserve color accuracy, especially in gradients and areas with subtle tonal variation where JPEG compression creates visible banding.
  • If you're emailing images to recipients using Outlook or older mail clients, convert to JPG first — Outlook has historically had partial or inconsistent WebP rendering support.
  • Run your converted WebP files through the Image Compressor at 80–85% quality for the smallest possible web-optimized output before uploading to a CMS.

Privacy & Data Security

Image format conversion runs entirely in your web browser. Your image is loaded from your device's file system into browser memory via the File API and drawn onto an HTML5 Canvas element. The Canvas API re-encodes the image into your selected output format using the browser's native codec — this entire process executes locally on your device. No image data, no pixel information, no file name, and no file metadata is transmitted to any external server at any point during conversion. The tool uses no third-party image processing API or cloud service. This makes it appropriate for converting images that contain personal or sensitive content, including scanned documents, identification photos, and private media.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best image format for websites?
WebP and AVIF are the best choices for web — they produce the smallest files with excellent quality and support transparency. For universal compatibility in older environments, JPG works for photos and PNG works for graphics requiring transparency.
Does converting from JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. Converting a compressed JPG to PNG wraps the existing compressed data in a lossless container. It does not add back detail that JPEG compression already removed. For best quality, always start with the original uncompressed source.
Will I lose transparency when converting PNG to JPG?
Yes. JPG does not support alpha channels. Transparent areas will be filled with white. Use PNG, WebP, or AVIF as the output format if you need to preserve transparency.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
Yes! The tool supports powerful bulk processing. You can drag and drop dozens of images, apply your settings, and instantly download all the converted files packaged into a single ZIP archive.
Does the quality slider affect PNG output?
No. PNG uses lossless encoding and does not have a quality setting. The slider only applies to lossy formats like JPG and WebP.
Are my images uploaded to your servers during conversion?
No. All conversion happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.
Does my browser support AVIF?
AVIF is a next-generation image format that offers superior compression. It is supported natively in modern versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. If you see the AVIF option, your browser supports it!
Why did my GIF convert to a static image?
The HTML5 Canvas API, which powers our client-side converter, only processes the first frame of an animated GIF. It cannot currently encode or decode full animations, so the output will be a single, static frame.
